UNUSUAL TECHNIQUES CREATED BY THE ARTIST USING POLLUTION
Alexandre Orion has developed unique artistic techniques that uses soot as a central medium, transforming environmental degradation into thought-provoking works of art.
OSSARIO
In Ossario, Alexandre Orion developed a striking urban intervention where he uses fabric scraps to clean the soot from the walls of São Paulo's tunnels. At this nocturnal intervention, Orion selectively removes layers of pollution left by passing cars, revealing thousands of skulls on the surfaces. The Ossario video has been viewed by more than 4 million people in exhibitions and screenings worldwide.
POLLUTION ON CANVAS
In this series of works, Alexandre Orion uses soot collected during his Ossario intervention as a pigment. The soot is mixed with a clear, colorless acrylic base, creating a range of grey tones. As the artist applies it to large-scale murals and canvases, he creates realistic images. Through this process, Orion transforms environmental debris into powerful, thought-provoking art that questions our relationship with the environment and our contemporary way of life.
POLLUGRAPHY
Pollugraphy is a technique developed by Alexandre Orion that uses pollution directly from its source as a printing method. After years of research, Orion printed soot collected from truck exhaust pipes onto fabric using metal matrices. The resulting works feature intricate images of skulls, created directly from environmental debris. Through this process, Orion transforms pollution into art, highlighting the impact of urbanization and the environmental crisis.
SEE ALSO POLLUTION ON WALL
Orion uses soot collected during his Ossario intervention as a pigment to create large scale murals. The artist employs forced perspective to craft impressive optical illusions. When viewed from specific angles in the streets, these murals appear to shift and transform.
WORKS IN IMPORTANT ART COLLECTIONS
AROUND THE WORLD
Metabioptics is a groundbreaking series by artist Alexandre Orion. After graffitiing the walls, with his camera in hand, Orion captures the spontaneous moments of interaction of passersby that blur the boundary between reality and fiction. These works have been exhibited and are part of prestigious art collections worldwide, including Fondation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain in Paris, Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, Centrum Beeldende Kunst in Rotterdam, Itaú Cultural, Deutsche Bank, MAD Museum in New York, Milwaukee Art Museum, Padre Anchieta Foundation, Nelson-Atkins Museum, Spencer Museum of Art, and many others.

OSSARIO
Ossário is the title of the interventions Orion made in the tunnels of São Paulo. During the early hours of the morning, using only cloth scraps, the artist removes part of the thick layer of pollution that coats the tunnel walls. By selectively cleaning the soot deposited by cars, Orion draws thousands of skulls on the walls. The Ossário video has been viewed by more than 6 million people in exhibitions and screenings worldwide.
METABIOTICA
Using Since 2001, Alexandre Orion has been creating paintings on the city’s walls, and capturing spontaneous interactions from passersby with his camera. The result is a series of photographs that give urban intervention a real-life dimension, fostering a meeting (or confrontation) between reality and fiction in the photographic field. The Metabiotics series has been part of solo and group exhibitions in over 30 countries across all continents.
